Can taking oil out of the earth cause earthquakes.?

Do you think oil in the earth possibly lubricates the tectonic plates somehow ( I haven't studied oil fields and the relation to fault lines yet) and allows them to move smoothly over each other and by taking it away causes the edges of the plates to "catch" and cause earthquakes? And also, when drilling for oil, do the oil companies backfill the pockets made when extracting the oil or are there empty pockets that could allow the ground to settle and cause earthquakes? Your opinion on this please?
