I ume you are keeping a whip in your hands to keep him off you while he is lunging. Mine often, in the first few minutes, feel their oats and start kicking and acting up, but then always settle down. You have to be dominant over the horse, but with love. Show him you disapprove of his behaviour also. As long as he acts up, make him keep lunging. Once he does it right, then release and reward him - then start over.
