How can I avoid buying a $1300 ECU for my 07 gsx r600?

After i tried and failed to fix my bike It took the mechanic 10 service hours to find out I need a new ecu. First off, is and ecu the same thing as an IF controller? And does anyone have a good aftermarket solution for this? Thx
